Keeping Pets and Their People Together, One Bowl at a Time
For many pet parents, keeping a pet’s bowl full is something they never have to think twice about. But when a family faces financial hardship, even everyday pet care can become a challenge. The Louisiana SPCA Pet Food Pantry was created to help provide relief, giving families access to pet food and essential supplies so they can continue caring for the pets they love.
Each year, we distribute more than 150,000 pounds of pet food, along with other pet-related necessities, to families in need. But the impact of our Pet Food Pantry goes far beyond what’s on the shelves. Every donation helps ease a burden for a pet parent and can help keep a beloved pet safely at home.
Keeping our pantry stocked takes a community. From individual donors to local businesses and community partners, every contribution helps ensure pets and their families have the support they need when they need it most.
More Than Just a Bag of Food
Keeping a pet’s bowl full can help keep a family together. And sometimes, that small act of support can mean everything!
Every day, we see how quickly a family’s circumstances can change. A job loss, rising expenses, an unexpected veterinary bill, or the loss of stable housing can leave loving pet parents facing choices they never imagined having to make. Sometimes, that means choosing between putting food on the table for their family and keeping their pet’s bowl full. Other times, it means surrendering or abandoning a beloved companion simply because they can no longer afford to provide the care they need.
Pets who once slept beside their people, knew their daily routines, and felt safe in their homes can suddenly find themselves in an unfamiliar shelter environment. For some, the stress of losing the people they love can be overwhelming, and we may see them become withdrawn, anxious, or begin to deteriorate.
• Loving pets are surrendered, because their families can no longer afford their care.
• Pets are abandoned because their owners have run out of options.
• Families struggle to choose between their own basic needs and their pets’ needs.
• Pets lose the people, routines, and homes they have always known.
• Animals struggle emotionally and physically after entering the shelter.
Every one of these situations reminds us that sometimes, families do not need to give up their pets. They simply need a little help getting through a difficult time. Our Pet Food Pantry exists to provide that help. By providing pet food and essential supplies, we can ease some of the financial pressure families are facing and help prevent a temporary hardship from becoming a permanent separation.
A Pantry Powered by the Community
Our Pet Food Pantry is powered by the generosity of our community. Because the food and supplies we distribute are donation-based, our pantry can run low quickly, and keeping our shelves stocked takes all of us.
Whether you’re dropping off a bag of food, donating supplies, or ordering items directly from our Amazon Wishlist, your support helps us continue providing essential resources to pets and families who need them

• Drop Off a Donation – Bring your donated pet food and supplies to either of our Louisiana SPCA campuses during regular hours.
• Shop Our Amazon Wishlist – You can purchase needed items through our Amazon Wishlist, and your donation will be shipped directly to our Orleans or Plaquemines campuses for community distribution.
