Volunteers bring energy, compassion and so much more to the Louisiana SPCA. Whether you’re spending time with animals, helping at an event, taking photos or lending a hand behind the scenes, your time helps us create better outcomes for pets and the people who love them.


There are many ways to get involved, and you don’t need animal-handling experience to make an impact.

Getting Started is Easy

Ready to join us? Here’s what to expect:

1. Submit your application
Tell us a little about yourself and your interest in volunteering.

2. Complete online orientation
You’ll learn more about the Louisiana SPCA, our volunteer program and the different ways you can get involved.

3. Find the opportunities that fit you
After orientation, you’ll receive information about available volunteer opportunities and any additional steps or training needed for specific roles.

Who Can Volunteer?

We welcome community members ages 12 and older.

• Volunteers ages 12–17 need a parent or guardian’s signed consent.
• Volunteers ages 12–15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while volunteering.
• Many volunteer opportunities take place around animals, but you are not required to handle animals to participate.

Volunteer Together

Looking for a meaningful way to spend time together while giving back? We welcome schools, businesses, community organizations and other groups for volunteer service days.


Groups of approximately 10–15 people work best, with most service projects lasting about two hours. Opportunities may include landscaping, preparing enrichment items, helping with events, administrative projects and animal care support.


And, when possible, we’ll make sure your group gets some time with our adoptable animals too.


Participants under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Kitten Krewe

Kitten Krewe is one of our most popular foster programs, especially during kitten season. Because kittens must reach at least 2 pounds before they can be spayed or neutered, foster families provide the care they need while they grow.

Whenever possible, we keep litters together, so fosters should be prepared to care for more than one kitten at a time.

Our foster program gives temporary homes to nearly 1,500 foster animals each year until they are ready to make their adoption debuts. While in foster care, we take of the medical care of each animal.
