Training That Creates Lasting Change for People and Pets

Understanding the “Why” Behind Behavior

When people think about dog training, they often picture teaching commands like sit, stay, or come. While those skills are important, training is about much more than obedience. It’s about helping people better understand their pets, work through challenges, and strengthen the bond they share.

At the Louisiana SPCA, our Training & Enrichment programs help families build the skills and confidence needed to create successful, lifelong relationships with their pets. Through positive reinforcement, guidance, and education, pet owners learn how to better communicate with their animals and address common behavioral challenges before they become bigger obstacles..

So far in 2026, 259 families have participated in Louisiana SPCA training programs, gaining tools that help their pets and families thrive together.

Building Confidence Through Training and Enrichment

Every pet is different, which is why the Louisiana SPCA offers a variety of opportunities designed to meet animals and their families where they are.

From puppy socialization and basic manners classes to enrichment opportunities and behavior support, our programs help pets gain confidence while teaching owners how to better understand their animals’ needs. We also provide an extensive library of free training resources that help pet owners continue learning long after class ends.

Training and enrichment are also an important part of life for animals in our care. Through behavior evaluations, enrichment activities, and shelter playgroups, our team helps dogs build confidence, develop social skills, and showcase their personalities. These experiences not only improve quality of life during their shelter stay but can also help prepare them for success in future homes.

When pets are given opportunities to learn, grow, and build confidence, better outcomes become possible.

A New Leash on Life for Fella

Meet Fella, a friendly dog who came into the Louisiana SPCA’s care after being found roaming the streets in February 2026. His finder reported seeing him in the area for several days before safely catching him. Upon arrival, Fella was friendly with staff, but he had a lot of energy and struggled with stress when separated from people.

Fella needed an outlet for his energy and support with managing stress. Through our New Leash on Life program, he had the opportunity to work on his behavior and build the skills needed to thrive outside the shelter environment.

Our New Leash on Life program, a six-week partnership with the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women. Through the program, dogs receive consistent training, socialization and positive reinforcement from participating women, helping them develop better behaviors and prepare for life with an adoptive family.

Fella returned to the Louisiana SPCA on September 30, having completed the program and taken another step toward finding his forever home. On October 6, he found his perfect match and was adopted!
