When many people think of the Louisiana SPCA, they picture animals waiting to be adopted or imagine us as simply a place to drop off stray animals found on the streets of New Orleans. While, at our core, our organization is dedicated to providing safe sheltering for animals in need and tirelessly working to give them a second chance through our adoption services.

Our mission is so much more than that—it’s a larger commitment to promoting, protecting, and advancing Louisiana’s companion animals. Our dedicated team and impactful programs make life-changing differences every day not only for the animals in our shelters, but also for our community and the pets who are already part of loving families. Ensuring every furry member of our community has the opportunity to live a safe, healthy, and happy life.

And for more than 135 years, since our founding in 1888, the Louisiana SPCA has worked to protect animals, strengthen our community, and support the people who love them. TODAY, OUR WORK REACHES FAR BEYOND THE WALLS OF OUR SHELTERS!

We provide lifesaving medical care, accessible veterinary services, adoption and out-of-shelter placement opportunities, family-preservation resources, humane law enforcement and emergency response, animal training and behavioral support, and community-based animal welfare programs. Together, these services create Second Chances for animals while helping people and pets thrive together.

Every Second Chance Starts with Someone Who Cares

Every day, animals come to the Louisiana SPCA for different reasons. Some are lost, abandoned, or in need of medical care. Others have loving families facing challenges that make caring for a pet difficult.

What they share is a need for a Second Chance!

Sometimes, giving an animal a second chance means offering them a safe place until they find a loving new home. Other times, it’s helping a senior pet get the dental surgery they need, filling a pet’s bowl with nourishing food, providing puppy training for a struggling family, or making sure a dog has an appropriately sized housing crate, so they can safely stay with the family who loves them.

A Mission Built on Second Chances: Meet King!

Here at the Louisiana SPCA, we understand that rescue doesn’t happen because of one person, one program, or one moment. It’s a team effort, and here’s a story that shows exactly what that can look like: Meet King!

When King arrived at the Louisiana SPCA, he was waiting for what every shelter pet hopes for: a family to call his own. While he waited, another dog named Rickey arrived in critical condition in need of a life-saving blood transfusion. Though Ricky’s family loved him dearly, the cost of emergency treatment was more than they could manage. However, our veterinary and community initiatives team were determined to save Ricky’s life. However, first, they needed to find a compatible donor and King, an adorably charming Pit Bull, who was recently surrendered to our shelter, was the perfect match.

Because King was healthy and receiving care at the Louisiana SPCA, he was able to donate blood to save Rickey’s life, making it possible for him to return home the very next day. Then King was able to receive his very own Second Chance after having a video of his heroism showcased to the world, helping his forever family find him, driving more than 5 hours to welcome him into their hearts—FOREVER!

One animal received a Second Chance and, along the way, helped create one for someone else. That’s what More Than a Shelter can look like!

Looking Beyond Just Adoptions

While King’s story is memorable, the work behind it happens every day for so many amazing animals, each with a story of their own, right here at the Louisiana SPCA.
