From Rescue to Adoption: Lil Dicky’s Journey to Recovery

On the afternoon of August 18, a concerned Upper Ninth Ward resident spotted a small puppy weaving through traffic near the intersection of Florida Avenue and Louisa Street. Alone, frightened, and vulnerable, this little guy was in serious danger. It was immediately clear that he needed someone to stop, step in, and help him. And without hesitation, the caring Samaritan rescued the puppy and quickly brought him to our Orleans Campus Shelter.

Upon arrival, our Animal Intake team immediately assessed the puppy’s condition, giving him a body condition score of just 3 out of 9. At just four months old, the puppy, later named Lil Dicky, was in heartbreaking shape. Painfully underweight, his spine was visible beneath his skin, and his fur was matted from head to tail. Though so young, Lil Dicky looked much older than his actual age. His condition told a story of hardship, and the worry in their eyes made it clear they had endured more than any normal puppy should.

That was where his journey toward healing began. Our Shelter Clinic team carefully removed the painful mats from his fur, while our Behavior and Enrichment team, with support through office fostering from our Administrative/Advancement staff, worked to help him feel safe and comfortable. With patience and gentle encouragement, Lil Dicky slowly began to come out of his shell, revealing a happy, playful puppy.

And two weeks after his arrival, Lil Dicky was ADOPTED! Finally getting the happy ending he deserved, able to grow and thrive in a loving home.
