Cold Weather Tips for Pet Safety

You’re probably already aware of the risks posed by warm weather and leaving pets in hot cars, but did you know that cold weather also poses serious threats to your pets’ health?

Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during cold weather:

• If the weather is too cold for a human, then it is too severe for a pet.
• Limit time outdoors or keep pets inside. Shivering is a clear sign your pet is cold.
• If dogs are left outside, they should have a draft-free shelter large enough to stand and turn around in, yet small enough to retain body heat. Use a layer of straw or other bedding material to help insulate them against the cold.
• Outdoor cats seek heat from cars. Bang the hood or honk the horn before turning it on.
• Never leave your pet IN a car! A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter and cause the animal to freeze.
• Bundle up. Coats and sweaters and yes, even dog booties can keep your pet warm.
